The National Broadband Plan: Affordable-Speedy-Accessible-Competitive-Socially Sound

The FCC’s recent release of its long awaited Broadband Plan has hit the streets with a resounding affirmation of what America needs with connectivity, competitiveness, affordability, speed, and social readiness. If the plan is adopted as proposed, America will truly benefit from the economics of a public-private partnership in creating a superior broadband pipeline for global success, see (National Broadband Plan: Connecting America).

The Plan Outline:

• Accessible and Affordable to 100 million homes with speeds of 100 megabits upload and 50 download

• Be (Number One) in Mobility access and speeds compared to any other nation

• Create Universal Access for all Americans including the means, skills, and affordability; if they choose

• Upgrade Community Schools, Hospitals and Government buildings for access to 1 Gbps broadband service

• Create a Public Safety Wireless Network and access for all first responders

• Promote a Clean Energy Economy, and ensure Americans are able to track energy consumptions through broadband

The Road Map:

• Foster robust competition within the broadband sector to drive demand for increased network performance while lowering deployment cost of infrastructure; monitor and benchmark competitive behavior, provide consumers with performance of broadband services, reform access to right-of-ways, review wholesale access policies, and increase spectrum availability

• Reallocate the existing Universal Service Fund to provide all Americans with access to broadband just as the plan was used to fund telephone service to all Americans in the 20th Century

• Reclaim Broadcast Spectrum in auctions of, (300 MHZ by 2015-500 MHZ by 2020), for the Wireless Industry and other ancillary uses thereby fulfilling a need to expand a burgeoning Mobile demand in connecting consumers, businesses, and the public sector

• Promote E-rate and Rural Health Care Programs, support non-profit and government institutions with affordable and alternative means of connectivity to broadband infrastructures which allows lower investment costs by reforming incentive structures, licensing and data interoperability for all public organizations

Shifting Priorities

• The FCC moved to gather existing spectrum from the Broadcast Industry to help free up space for the Wireless Industry, in much need of new spectrum on its continued growth forecasts. The benefactors will be companies like Cisco, providing network support, and Verizon and AT&T Wireless operators. Broadcasters will benefit from sharing in spectrum auction fees of their unused bandwidth.

• The Universal Service Fund will be used to promote and incent companies to build-out their networks to underserved portions of the markets for wire-line and wireless access. This fund is severely outdated from its original intent of providing access to telephone service for the nation.

The FCC seems to have done its homework. Congratulations to the FCC commissioners, staff, and partners, for their hard work and dedication in creating a viable and workable solution for a National Broadband Plan roll-out for the next decade. While it is not heavy on regulation; the plan sets out a road-map to foster collaboration, innovation, investment opportunities, and transparency within its recommendations. Legislators should look to affirm the plan quickly and move forward with an innovative and economically sound superior broadband gateway for our public and private sectors.

Chickens, Cows, Money and the Cloud

Here’s an interesting analogy on cloud computing for you! In the Christian Science Monitor’s Reformed Broker blog, the writer reports on the recent RSA Conference on computer security held earlier this month in San Francisco, and he quotes an observation from an attendee that appeared originally in The Economist.

At the meeting, Art Coviello, president of EMC’s security division, likened the cloud to the virtualization of money. Once upon a time, people carried chickens under their arms and led cows around to market in order to barter for the goods they needed – maybe a nice bed (stuffed with some luxurious fresh straw). Then, along came money, first coins, and then paper. And people could carry their wealth more easily – maybe even higher someone to tote that bed home for them.

Innovation pays off for Cambridge Broadband Networks

Microwave telecoms specialists named as one of UK's top companies for investment in R&D

Cambridge, UK, 18th March 2010: Cambridge Broadband Networks has been recognised by the UK Government for its investment in research and development (R&D). The mobile network microwave backhaul specialist is one of the top 50 technology hardware and equipment sector companies recognised in 'The Department for Business Innovation and Skills' 2009 R&D Scoreboard. The listing recognises the USD$6.7m R&D investment made by Cambridge Broadband Networks between 2008 and 2009 to ready its VectaStar products for the mobile backhaul expansion demands.

Dramatic increases in mobile data traffic, driven by the proliferation of smartphones and USB dongles have placed an unprecedented strain on backhaul networks. In order to avoid spiralling CAPEX and OPEX costs mobile operators have had to look for alternative backhaul solutions to meet the increased capacity demands. Cambridge Broadband Networks has responded by investing heavily in the rapid evolution of its VectaStar point-to-multipoint (PMP) microwave backhaul solutions. VectaStar PMP solutions are particularly suited to satisfying the exploding demand for HSDPA and LTE data backhaul.

As a result, uptake of VectaStar deployments has been dramatic, with significant market gains for Cambridge Broadband Networks in a wide range of markets. In addition to increasing adoption in the developed European market, VectaStar now helps to power the world's busiest HSPA network (Mobily, Saudi Arabia), it is being deployed in Africa by the world's fastest growing operator, MTN group and by Gateway (Vodacom), to power the world's largest PMP microwave network. These and other contract wins, placed Cambridge Broadband Networks into the Sunday Times Tech Track 100 in 2009 and the company has just been named as a finalist in Growing Business magazine's Fast Growth Business of Year Awards 2010.

Graham Peel, CEO at Cambridge Broadband Networks, said: "No other company in our sector is investing so heavily in R&D. That investment is producing significant dividends for Cambridge Broadband Networks and its customers. Our VectaStar PMP microwave backhaul solutions now offer an efficient, high capacity and future proofed means of addressing the demand for mobile backhaul, and they deliver clear and quantifiable savings in both operating and capital expenditure. Those characteristics have given us a lead on both legacy microwave technologies and our competitors in the PMP microwave sector."

VectaStar is a next generation alternative to legacy mobile backhaul solutions which include point-to-point (P2P) microwave and leased lines. It complements fibre as a technology choice to meet increased cell site traffic capacity demands. The PMP based architecture is quick to deploy, costing a fraction of fibre deployments and means that precious spectrum resources are used both efficiently and dynamically as network traffic builds. VectaStar also reduces by nearly 50% the number of microwave radios required to build the network (compared to P2P), contributing to a significant reduction in CAPEX and OPEX, reductions in network complexity, site access and maintenance demands as well as energy consumption.

-ends-

About Cambridge Broadband Networks (www.cbnl.com)
Cambridge Broadband Networks a member of the Next Generation Mobile Network Alliance (NGMN), provides telecommunications operators with carrier-class wireless point-to-multipoint transmission equipment. The company's unique approach to backhaul means that its technology provides operators with a highly compelling business case, reducing backhaul costs by up to 60%. To date, Cambridge Broadband Networks products have been commercially deployed and technically proven in more than 30 countries, and the company continues to expand into new geographical markets as wireless networks become more widespread throughout the world. Privately-held, Cambridge Broadband Networks has headquarters in Cambridge, UK, with offices in Malaysia and South Africa and manufacturing facilities in China.

About the Department for Business Innovation and Skills R&D Scoreboard (www.innovation.gov.uk/rd_scoreboard/)
The Scoreboard is an international league table of the companies investing the most in R&D. It is designed as a benchmarking tool for companies, investors and policy-makers. The scoreboard report summarises the 2008 company data on investment in R&D and financial performance of the 1,000 UK companies that have invested most in R&D, including foreign-owned companies whose R&D is conducted in the UK and reported in the UK1000. To put the UK performance into perspective, it also includes data on the 1,000 most R&D active companies globally (G1000) and highlights the main trends in both the UK and global data.

Media contacts
For more information about any of the issues in this press release, please contact:

James Mitchell, Babel PR
cbn@babelpr.com
+44 (0)20 7434 5550
www.babelpr.com

AP: You Are Guilty Until Proven Innocent

I was working on an article about making the distinction between Enterprise and Consumer Cloud Computing, in which I offered the viewpoint that the current issues involving the Enterprise Cloud are matters of implementation, while the main issue with Consumer Cloud is one of ideology.

Enterprise Cloud discussions are about public v private v hyrid, virtualization v real cloud, and what metrics are used to justify or reject a Cloud Computing initiative or strategy.

But the main Consumer Cloud discussion is whether we should do it all. Shall we turn over all of our personal information to a big corporation, which is very likely to cave into governmental "requests" to see that information?
